Donna Lee Kelso Langer St. Petersburg, Florida Aug. 9, 1931-July 14, 2019 The independent, strong willed, self-reliant, long-time educator, Donna Lee Kelso Langer, 87, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2019 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Born Sunday, August 9, 1931 on a family farm in Taylor County, Iowa to Ermol & Beryl Kelso, Donna Lee decided at an early age to be a teacher. Attending the one-room country school for eight years then high school in Louisiana, she graduated and received her diploma in Oregon. After returning to Iowa, she enrolled in community college then Drake University where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Education. She married, moved to Missouri, continued to teach and had her son, Herbert Brian. A few years later, the family moved to Michigan, where she divorced and completed her Masters degree with a certification as a Reading Specialist. Over the span of 31 years, she educated thousands of children in Iowa, Missouri, and Michigan. She relocated to SE Kansas where she was instrumental in organizing an Adult Literacy program and wrote a series of books to teach adults how to read in order to help them change their lives. Concurrently, she taught at Pittsburg State University in the Department of Education. Donna Lee loved to learn which was a reason for her extensive travels in the US, Canada, Mexico, Israel, Egypt and the Caribbean. Second to teaching, she enjoyed buying property and making improvements. In the early 2000s, Donna moved to Michigan living next door to her son and his family. She especially treasured her time spent with grandsons, Herbie and Nolan. In 2009, she relocated to Florida with her nephew and niece-in-law, Kent & Tamara, knowing in the following years she would need more assistance. Donna Lee was predeceased by her parents, Beryl Kenneth Kelso, Sr. and Ermol L. Kelso. Surviving are her son, Herbert Brian Langer (Mary Ellen), grandsons, Herbert James Langer and Nolan Paul Langer all of Whitmore Lake, MI; nephews: Kent Kelso (Tamara); Kirk Kelso (Vick); Kendall Kelso (Terri); Keaton Kelso (Karen); niece Kate Higdon (Jason); two (of many) great-nephews: Kaeden and Kellan Kelso and numerous great-nieces. In addition, her brother, Beryl Kelso, survives her. At Donna Lee's request, no service will be held.
