Doris Mae (Westfall) Leighton was born May 15, 1924 in McCook, Nebraska to Roy and Flora (Hahn) Westfall. She was the youngest of four children and the only girl, hence the family always referred to her as "Babe". She passed away, June 2, 2019, at the age of 95 years and 18 days. The family moved to Omaha when Doris was very young. She spent all of her school years living in the Benson area. She graduated from Benson High School with the class of 1942. A lifelong, school girl friend of Doris' introduced her to Robert Leighton, when they went on a blind double date together. She and Bob were married on April 5, 1947. Three children were born to this union, Rodney, Gregory and Susan. Doris worked outside of the home for some years when the children got older. She then followed her passion, and started a ceramics class for herself and a few close friends. This little, home class turned into a full time occupation, with classes four to five times a week and hundreds of students and friends. Doris won many awards for her creations. Ceramics wasn't her only love. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, china painting, gardening and especially cooking. She was always looking through magazines for new recipes to try. She looked forward to cooking for family gatherings. In 1988, she and Bob retired, and bought a farm in New Market, and moved to the "country". Being a city girl, Doris took to country life easily. She spent many hours in her flower beds, and vegetable garden. She continued to teach ceramics in New Market and made more new friends. Doris was a survivor, she battled through two cancer surgeries and radiation and a broken hip. She was a devoted caretaker of her husband Bob for several years prior to his death. Her love of beautiful things and flowers lasted until the day she died. Preceding Doris in death are parents; husband, Bob Leighton; brothers, Wilbur Westfall and Jim Westfall. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Rodney (Connie) Leighton of Woodbine, Iowa; Gregory Leighton of New Market, Iowa; and Susan (Patrick) Larson of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Aaron) Bailey of Omaha, Nebraska; Amy (Brad) Hamilton of Omaha, Nebraska; Kristy (Shane) Smith of Kennewick, Washington; Ruby (Austin) Alsept of the United States Air Force, San Antonio, Texas; Scott Leighton of Beaufort, South Carolina; eight great grandchildren; a brother, Paul Westfall of Kansas City, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
