Ava Dean "Billie" Shum Clarinda, Iowa Nov. 28, 1929-May 9, 2020 Billie Shum, 90, of Clarinda, Iowa entered into peace Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. Private Graveside Funeral Services were held. Open visitation was held 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Interment was held at the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Ava Dean "Billie" Shum (Carroll) was born November 28, Thanksgiving Day of 1929; a daughter to Addison Volley Carroll and Mary Jane (Gloekler) Carroll in Worth County, Missouri. Her family then moved to Taylor County, Iowa where she attended grade school in Athelstan, Iowa. The family then moved to Nodaway County, Missouri and she graduated from Clearmont High School in 1948 as valedictorian of her class. Billie married Jim Shum on April 2, 1948 in Pickering, Missouri and moved to Page County, Iowa where they spent the next 72 years together residing in rural Page County. Together they raised two sons: Clifford Shum and Gary Shum. She felt blessed that their three grandchildren lived near and they could attend their school functions and spend time together. They now live away: Mark Shum in Fort Worth, Texas, Kelly (Shaun) Bernardon in Lee's Summit, Missouri, Jodi Brase and husband Brett in Lee's Summit, Missouri; along with great granddaughters: Elliot Bernardon and Jayden Ainsworth. Billie was employed for 23 years at the C.T.C. where she retired but later returned and worked part time at the C.C.F. She was a member of the Neighborhood Club (G.N.U.) for over 50 years. After retirement Billie did volunteer work at the Methodist Church and Clarinda Hospital Medical Records Department. She also served several Years on the board of directors for the Community Center. Billie was self described outdoor person who like to garden and ride the lawn mower. She enjoyed auctions of all kinds. Billie and Jim belonged to several card clubs and played pitch whenever the opportunity arose. Billie passed away on May 9, 2020 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and two brothers and twin brother A.V. Carroll. Surviving Billie is her husband of 72 years, Jim Shum of Clarinda; children, Clifford Shum and wife Becky of Clarinda and Gary Shum of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren: Mark Shum of Fort Worth, Texas, Kelley Bernardon and husband Shaun of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Jodi Brase and husband Brett of of Lee's Summit, Missouri; great grandchildren: Elliot Bernardon and Jayden Ainsworth; sisters, Luziena Charles and Angie McCollum of St. Joseph, Missouri; along with extended relatives and a host of friends.
