Sloan was born on January 9, 1930 to Oral and Lula Atherton Sloan at the family farm just outside of Blanchard, IA. He entered into rest on September 26, 2019 at Clarinda Regional Health Center. He attended the country elementary school where his report card stated that he was an "annoyance to others." He graduated from Blanchard High School in 1948 and started farming with his father. In 1950 he met Helen Petry at the grocery store while he was buying a loaf of bread. He asked her on a date and that loaf of bread turned into 68 years of dates with Helen. Keith was drafted in to the Army in 1950 and shortly after married Helen on December 17, 1950. He was deployed to Korea where he bravely served his country in the 116th Company as an engineer. After returning home he and Helen began farming near Blanchard. In 1954 their first daughter Kathy was born and in 1961 they welcomed their second daughter, Kelly. Keith farmed until 1971 and then began a career at Blanchard Co Op all the while raising livestock with Helen. In 1975 he began working at South Page Community Schools as head of maintenance. During this time, he also drove the school bus where he would later state that it was the most dangerous job he ever had. He retired from South Page in 1995. Keith was an excellent carpenter. He built custom cabinets, furniture for his daughters, and rocking horses and hope chests for his grand-daughters Jessica and Jordan. Keith spent his Saturdays watching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved to tease his grandson-in-laws about the Husker's terrible football and it was something that only he could get away with. Keith's grandfather immigrated from County Antrim, Ireland in 1869. He was very proud of his Irish heritage. Above all else Keith loved his family. All were together Sunday before his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenneth, sister-in-law Phyllis, parents-in-law Harold and Mary Petry, Uncle James Petry, brother-in-law Rex Petry, and sister-in-law Peggy Luhrs Petry. He is survived by his wife Helen, daughters Kathy (Kennon Balster, Blanchard), Kelly Sloan (life partner Olin Miller, Lincoln), granddaughters Jessica (Tom Gilmore), Jordan (John Harvey) all of Omaha, grandson Trey Foxx Athen of Hamburg, his greatest blessings, his great-grandchildren Addison Sloan and Noah John Harvey, brother-in-law Dr. Don D. Petry of Seattle, Washington, sister-in-law Bonnie Smith of Smyrna, Delaware, sister-in-law Berniece Fletcher of Clinton, Missouri, and many loving nieces and nephews.
