The leaves are either changing or falling off the trees.
Afternoon shadows are long.
And baseball is nearing the end of another season.
This week is the World Series between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals. Even though I have a favorite in Boston, I always like when a new team gets to play in the fall classic. It’s good for the game. And Washington is sort of new. If you remember, the team had been in Montreal, Canada, in the 1990s before moving to the national’s capital in 2005.
Next year Major League Baseball season will get Iowa some attention.
Scheduled to play Aug. 13 near the “Field of Dreams” movie site outside of Dyersville, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will play near the iconic location in a portable stadium. The movie has been a wonderful benefit to Iowa in so many ways. I don’t blame MLB for wanting in on that.
I’ve always been critical of pro sports leagues not playing in team’s stadiums as I think it’s not fair to the local fans that support the team. Pro football has done that for years with games in London. Baseball played in London this season.
NFL teams have eight home games, so missing one has an impact. Baseball teams have 81 home games. Playing a few elsewhere doesn’t sting nearly as much for fans.
Major League Baseball games have been played in Pennsylvania the Little League complex and last year in Omaha before the College World Series.
This year was the 30th anniversary of the film’s release. This summer was my third visit to the field in 21 years. This year Jennifer brought our son Grant who had first seen the movie on the big screen in June. It was his idea for us to go.
And I will never get tired of visiting.
