Clarinda collected one win during the Class 1A State Tennis Doubles Championship played Friday and Saturday, May 24-25, in Waterloo.
The tournament was scheduled to be played at Byrnes Park Tennis Center. However, rain on Friday forced the tournament to be moved to the Black Hawk Tennis Club. Opening round matches for the 16 doubles teams got underway at 9:30 a.m.
Representing the Cardinals in the event were seniors Brady Williams and Alex Best. The Cardinals drew the Clear Lake tandem of Mac Adams and Aaron Blum in the first round.
Clear Lake won the opening set 6-1. Williams and Best forced the second set to a tiebreaker and came away with a 7-6(3) victory to force a third and decisive set.
In another closely contested battled, Williams and Best edged Clear Lake 7-5 to win the match and advance to the second round of the tournament.
Awaiting the Cardinals in the second round were Wes Johnson and Matthew Schmit of Xavier, Cedar Rapids. The Saints were the number one seed in the tournament.
Williams and Best suffered a 6-0 loss in the first set. The Cardinals then dropped the second set 6-2 to fall to the consolation bracket.
Needing a victory to advance to play on Saturday and clinch a top eight finish, Williams and Best faced off against Max Olsan and Caleb Hammerlinck and Max Olsan of Ballard. The Bombers were the fourth seed in the tournament.
Williams and Best were dealt a 6-3 loss in the first set. The Cardinals were then eliminated with a narrow 7-5 defeat in the second set of the match.
