Clarinda leads Shenandoah 15-12 in the Pride of Page County Trophy standings.
Those numbers reflect the totals after the fall sports season. The trophy is being contested for the first time during the 2019/20 sports season.
Clarinda won three of the four athletic competitions during the fall to outscore Shenandoah 7-2. Clarinda picked up three points for the win in football and two for winning in volleyball. Both schools gained two points in cross country. The Shenandoah girls beat Clarinda at the Clarinda meet while the Clarinda boys beat Shenandoah. Cross country was supposed to battle for more points at the Shenandoah meet, but the meet was canceled due to inclement weather.
Shenandoah made up two points in the academic portion of the competition. The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union have two levels of team academic awards they give out each season. A 3.25 team GPA or higher is the highest honor and earns the school two points in the Clarinda/Shenandoah battle while a 3.00 to 3.24 GPA receives the lesser of the two awards and one point.
Shenandoah earned the highest honor in volleyball, football, boys and girls cross country and football cheer, giving the school two points for each sport. Clarinda picked up two points in volleyball, boys and girls cross country and football cheer, but the football team did not add to the point total.
The schools will compete for more points during the winter sports season with most of the athletic points being earned in December. Girls and boys basketball meet Dec. 14, girls and boys bowling two days later and wrestling Dec. 19. The basketball teams will play for more points Jan. 17. The academic points will then be added following the season.
