Clarinda took to the Blue Oval in two events during the Class 2A Girls and Boys State Track Meet held Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

The Cardinals had one individual qualifier and also advanced to state in one relay event. Nathan Lindsay competed in the 110 meter hurdles Friday, while Clarinda participated in the preliminaries of the shuttle hurdle relay Thursday. The shuttle hurdle relay team consisted of Michael Shull, Aiden Shatava, Ethan Herzberg and Lindsay.

Clarinda was entered the first heat of the shuttle hurdle relay preliminaries. Also running in the heat were Dike-New Hartford, Mount Ayr and Hinton.

A total of six preliminary heats were held in the shuttle hurdle relay. The schools with the top eight times advanced to the finals Saturday.

The Cardinals finished fourth in their heat with a time of 1:06.56. Dike-New Hartford won the heat in 59.64, which was the fast time in the preliminary heats, and went on to claim the state title in the event Saturday in 59.49.

Clarinda finished 21st overall in the event.

Lindsay returned to the track Friday for the 110 meter hurdles. He was entered in the third heat of the preliminaries for the race.

Lindsay was clocked at 15.93 and finished sixth in his heat. Based on that time, Lindsay finished 15th overall in the field of 24 runners.

Lindsay reached the state meet after finishing second in the 110 meter hurdles at the Class 2A District 5 State Qualifying Track and Field Meet held Friday, May 10, at Panorama, Panora. Lindsay was clocked at 15.61 in the race.

The Cardinals also finished second in the shuttle hurdle relay with at time of 1:03.01 at the state qualifying meet to earn their spot in the state meet.

A total of eight qualifying meets were held across the state in Class 2A. The top two place winners in each event automatically qualified for the state meet. The next eight best performances statewide from the eight qualifying meets were also awarded at-large berths to the state meet to complete the field.
