Eli Drennen went the distance on the mound for Essex/South Page, but the Trojan bats managed just three hits in a 5-2 loss at Griswold, Monday, June 10.
Griswold picked up its first win of the season, denying the Trojans a chance at theirs. Essex/South Page fell to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the Corner Conference.
Drennen gave up just three hits and five runs, three earned. He walked two and struck out four in six innings.
A leadoff single turned into a run for the Tigers in the first inning. An error opened up a two-run third to give Griswold a 3-0 lead.
The Trojans picked up their first run, without a hit, in the fourth inning. With two outs, Wesley Johnson walked, Mason McClarnon was hit by a pitch and then Caden Henderson and Daniel Ohnmacht walked to force in a run.
The Trojans didn’t score again until the seventh when a Quentin Thornburg single scored Ohnmacht, who had reached on a walk.
Thornburg had two of the three Essex/South Page hits with McClarnon adding the other.
The Trojans took six walks and left the bases loaded twice.
Josh Brownlee reached the pitch limit in 5.2 innings for Griswold. Evan Kelly, who had two hits offensively, recorded the last four outs.
The Essex/South Page Trojans missed out on a couple opportunities to make things uncomfortable for Stanton, but the Vikings pulled away late for a 9-1 win, Friday, June 14, at Essex in Corner Conference play.
The Trojans left a runner at second base in the second inning, and runners at second and third in the third and fifth innings.
Tucker Hadden reached on an error in the second inning with the Trojans trailing 2-0. Henderson walked and Ohnmacht singled in the third, but the Trojans couldn’t get a hit to drive them in while trailing 4-0.
The Trojans broke through in the fifth inning while still trailing 4-0. Henderson reached on an error with two outs. Colton Thornburg and Ohnmacht followed with singles to drive in Henderson, but Stanton relief pitcher Keygan Day struck out Quentin Thornburg to end the threat.
Ohnmacht took the loss on the mound for Essex/South Page. He gave up six hits and one walk over the first six innings, but the Vikings scored five in the fifth for the final margin. Johnson came on in relief to secure the final out.
Ohnmacht led the bats with two of the four Trojan hits and an RBI.
The Trojans fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the Corner Conference with the loss.
The win was the fourth straight for the Vikings, keeping them unbeaten in the conference.
